Should Christians watch horror movies?

Evil, darkness, murder, blood, death, demons, violence, witch craft, immorality, wickedness, vile, dishonorable, corrupt, satanic, and destructive. That's all the things that come to my mind when I think about what a horror movie is. So, it's never made sense to me why anyone could take pleasure in watching things like the mutilation of a human body or the haunting of a demonic spirit. If you haven't guessed it already, I'm not a fan of scary movies at all. Nevertheless, the horror movie industry drawls millions of people to the box office every year.

Now, let's get to question at hand here.... Should Christians watch horror movies?

Even though I already have my own opinion on this subject, I asked this question to a few other followers of Christ. Some of their answers were concise, while others were drawn out with detailed examples. At any rate, each person had the same beliefs in the end.

Before I reveal what everyone answered, let's reflect on the following scriptures:

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Ephesians 4:27
And give no opportunity to the devil.

Romans 12:9
Love must be honest and true. Hate what is evil. Hold on to what is good.

Proverbs 4:14
Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil.




Psalms 34:14
Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Leviticus 19:31
“  Do not look for advice from people who get messages from those who have died. Do not go to people who talk to the spirits of the dead. If you do, they will make you “unclean.” I am the Lord your God."

Ephesians 6:11
Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

After reading those verses, you have probably figured out whether or not horror movies have any kind of place in a Christian's life. If not, I'll just break it down for you right now. Movies like Saw, Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge are increasingly becoming more acceptable forms of entertainment in our culture. Yet, these types of movies DO NOT glorify God, they glorify Satan. We are supposed to be Christ-like, the light of the world, and cling to what is good! Our walk with the Lord is in no way benefited by willingly placing gruesome images in front of our eyes. 




Ultimately, there is a wide range of other entertainment genres that should also be used with discretion. The key is to examined the context and drawl a conclusion based on God's word. With all this considered, I'd like to add that I didn't write this post to point fingers at anyone or judge. My hope was to open the eyes of those that have become more desensitized and numb by the worldly view.
